Promoting Diversity

The University is like a microcosm of the greater world, with students and staff drawn from different and diverse cultures, classes and creeds.

This being so, we have formulated a policy ‘Promoting and Managing Diversity in the Learning Environment' which encourages everyone to celebrate that diversity.  Consequently, in addition to a concern to prevent or eliminate discrimination, this policy reflects our respect for the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our community and seeks to ensure that diversity is managed in a constructive, creative and productive way so that everyone is encouraged to realise their full potential in the learning environment, and that their differences are respected and valued.

The policy extends to gender, community background, age, sexual preference, marital status, parental responsibility, socio-economic status.  Underpinning the policy are various Codes of Practice relating to equal opportunities, harassment of students, access for people with disabilities, and a range of measures concerning teaching methods, academic assessment and examinations which can be adopted if individual circumstances require it.

We hope that this policy conveys an important message to all potential students that every individual person is valued and respected, and that our main purpose is to ensure that all students develop themselves fully in a safe, congenial and stimulating learning environment.
