Ulster Bursaries

Our Bursaries for 2010 Entry*

We offer bursaries of up to £1,095 for each year of the course. They are in addition to any government grants you may receive and do not have to be paid back. Bursaries are designed to help students with course related costs such as books, equipment, travel or childcare and the total annual expenditure on bursaries by the University is currently around £4 million.

Bursaries are means tested and the amount a student receives is determined by the residual household income as assessed by the Education and Library Board/Local Authority.

Our bursaries for students starting a course in 2010 are:

  • £1,095 per year where residual household income is at or below £18,820
  • £640 per year where residual household income is between £18,821 and £21,525
  • £320 per year where residual household income is between £21,526 and £40,238

*these payments are subject to the Department for Employment and Learning confirming that funding is maintained at current levels.

Eligibility for bursaries

While the money for bursaries comes from the University, the bursary is paid by the Student Loans Company into the student’s bank account. In order to receive a bursary students must have applied for financial support to their Education and Library Board (ELB) or the relevant authorities in Great Britain (that is, Student Finance England, Student Finance Wales or the Student Awards Agency for Scotland). EU students should apply for financial support from the EU Customer Service Team at Darlington (EU Customer Services Team, Mowden Hall, Staindrop Road, Darlington, Co Durham. Tel: +44 (0)141 243570). Applications must be made to the relevant authority  by 30 May of the academic year for which support is sought.

To be eligible for a bursary a student must be permanently resident in the UK or EU and must be taking a full-time undergraduate course leading to a first degree, or a course leading to the Postgraduate Certificate in Education, for which the fees payable are £3,290.

However, there are exceptions to this and the following students are not eligible for bursaries:

• Students who are taking one of the following courses (where fees are less than £3,290 or additional financial support is available from other sources)

 (i) Associate Bachelor’s Degrees (where the fee is £1,310)
(ii) Allied Health Professional courses, that is Dietetics, Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiography, Speech and Language Therapy (where no fee is payable directly by students)
(iii) Social Work Degree (where additional government support is available)

Payment of bursaries

Bursaries are calculated automatically on the basis of residual household income and students do not, therefore, need to apply for a bursary and there are no application forms for this purpose.

Bursaries will be paid directly into a student’s bank account in one instalment on 7 March 2011.
